Migraine

A migraine is a type of headache that is felt as pulsating pain often on one side of the head (unilateral) but can also spread to both sides (bilateral). Migraines may also affect the visual sensory system and cause nausea and vomiting. These headache attacks can last hours to days (4-72 hours) and severely impact life quality of sufferers. Once more, migraine can be associated with other diseases such as depression and anxiety.
 
Migraine disease is the 3rd most common disease globally. Some patients experience episodic migraine (<15 migraine headaches per month), while others are chronic migraine sufferers (diagnosed as >15 migraine headaches per month, of which >8 have migraine-like features).
 
How migraines originate is not completely defined but is thought to occur due to dysfunction of nerves and blood vessels in the brain. The connection between the brainstem and the trigeminal nerve leads to neurotransmitter release (i.e. serotonin) affecting blood vessels and brain tissue. In addition to the sensitivity of external stimuli like bright lights, sounds and odours, these may trigger abnormal changes in blood flow contracting blood vessels and local nerves leading to the pain of a migraine attack.

Treatments

Standard treatments such as non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (aspirin and ibuprofen), analgesic painkillers and triptans are not always effective for patients. Other approved treatments include b-blockers, tricyclic anti-depressants, anti-convulsants (e.g. topiramate, sodium valproate) and onabotulinumtoxin-A (Botox) treatments but also have limited effectiveness and severe side effects. In addition, without adequate relief for patients there is risk of overuse of medicative approaches and drug-drug interactions.
 
There is currently no cure for migraines but understanding some key influencing factors can help manage symptoms more effectively.

 
 
Influencing Factors

There are several different factors that may cause migraine attacks in patients that range from lifestyle habits to certain external sensory stimuli. The most commonly known factors that have been recognised include:
Sleep - loss or excessive
Stress - feeling overwhelmed, fearful, or anxious
Hormones - for women, fluctuations in oestrogen during the menstrual cycle, puberty, or menopause
Diet - alcohol, caffeine, certain foods, as well as irregular eating and drinking habits  
Sensory stimuli - bright lights, loud sounds or unpleasant odours 
Medicines   
Improving lifestyle habits can be an effective way to reduce the number of migraine attacks experienced. This could be simple changes such as developing consistent sleep and eating habits, avoiding ‘trigger foods’ in your diet, and stress-relief hobbies such as regularly exercising, yoga and meditation.

 
Applying tVNS® for treatment of migraines

tVNS® is a clinically proven neuromodulation therapy that offers a flexible approach for the treatment of migraines. As a non-medicative approach, it is an effective adjunct (‘add-on’) therapy to medications used and helps reduce the number of migraine attacks experienced by users.
 
tVNS is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique for stimulating the vagus nerve through the skin. 8. HOW CAN I DELETE MY ACCOUNT?

Should you ever decide to delete your Account, you may do so by emailing info@neuropix.co. If you terminate your Account, any association between your Account and information we store will no longer be accessible through your Account. However, given the nature of sharing on the Services, any public activity on your Account prior to deletion will remain stored on our servers and will remain accessible to the public, unless otherwise prohibited by law.

9. LINKS TO AND INTERACTION WITH THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS

The Website may enable you to interact with or contain links to your Third Party Account and other third party Websites, mobile software applications and services that are not owned or controlled by us (each a “Third Party Service”). We make use of log files. We may use such information to analyse trends, administer the Website, track users’ movement around the Website, and gather demographic information.

The Website uses a tool called “Google Analytics” to collect information about use of the Website.
